Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about camp? Try finding the answer here, or contact us at info@TheLiteracyCamp.com

  • The Literacy Camp is located at 11615 N Hartel Rd. in Grand Ledge. It’s a beautiful building less than 5 minutes from the highway and we’re SO excited to be here this year!

  • The Literacy Camp is designed to have all new activities/books each session so that students can come multiple weeks/sessions and have a great time without repeating the same learning fun!

This means a student could stay for an all day session all 3 weeks & still do all new activities each session! Students can also come to any of the sessions independently, of course. Many returning campers always come one week that works best for them & many sign up for every session of the summer! They all have a blast!

  • You bet! Every camp day/session includes reading & writing workshops. This means a “mini lesson” where kiddos learn something new about reading & writing & then have independent reading & writing time. Teachers check in & support students during these times & help them improve skills, build upon skills they already have, find books they enjoy, etc. Every session, children also do a literacy related craft, play fun “summer camp” games, play outside & have snack time. While it may sound like school – IT IS NOT.

The Literacy Camp puts a very unique summer camp feel to an engaging & authentic learning environment. The teachers & staff create the kind of “magic” that will get your child to LOVE learning & ask to come back for another week!

  • All you need to do is check out our parent testimonials to see that The Literacy Camp is a great place for your child!

Every summer we have SO MANY families tell us about how they “made” their child come to camp & after they attended, they BEGGED their families to let them come back for an additional week. This feedback makes us smile EVERY. TIME. It’s why The Literacy Camp exists. Helping children to learn to LOVE learning and books is the passion of Team Literacy Camp. No matter where your child is on their journey toward this – we have a place for them at The Literacy Camp & can’t wait to see them find a LOVE for learning!

  • Yes, yes, and yes! For many children,The Literacy Camp is their happy place in the summer. It’s the perfect spot for kids who already love having a book and/or pencil in their hand!

Because we use a workshop approach, every child is encouraged & challenged at their own level. We have books available at all levels & avid readers are even encouraged to bring their own books & journals if they wish! This is not a place for us to “tutor” children who are struggling. We work to GROW and develop a love for reading & writing – and those kiddos that already come with that love (and skills) will be among those that GROW it. We love having these kiddos at camp & they love being here!

  • Unfortunately, we are only providing The Literacy Camp to incoming 1st-3rd graders this summer in the Lansing area. While we had campers of other ages in the past, we have found that the best way to serve our community & camp families is to focus in on only a couple grade levels – this has helped Team Literacy Camp to be skilled in those areas & has given our campers the best experience possible.

However, we also offer a couple online courses for parents in order to help them guide their children with reading & writing at home. They are self-paced & easy to follow along.

We also share with our social media & email audience all kinds of FREE ideas & resources for helping your children in the area of literacy as well.

Lastly, we’ll soon have an opportunity for older kiddos to participate as Literacy Camp Leaders. Stay tuned!

  • There are a limited number of scholarships available for families experiencing a financial need. We love being able to support those in need with this summer camp experience. Please fill out the scholarship application on the website for your specific location.

Also – remember that the best way to get the LOWEST PRICE AVAILABLE for The Literacy Camp is to register while the early bird discount is still running as well as get a refer-a-friend or sibling discount. If the friend you refer registers, you get 10% off your camp session!

  • We’re happy to try to accommodate these requests if we know about them ahead of time. Just be sure to make a note about things like this on your registration form & it shouldn’t be a problem!

Also, remember that all campers do spend time together outside of their classrooms during outdoor play time, snack, group crafts, etc. so if 2 kiddos are not in the same class – they can always hang out together during group time!

  • Yes! The Literacy Camp numbers are usually pretty even between boys & girls! Fun will be had by everyone!!

  • We are confident your child will have a great time at The Literacy Camp! You can assure him/her that we have campers come from all over! So lots of kiddos will be meeting for the first time & the teachers & staff work hard to help them all get to know each other & have a great time!

In recent years, children from over 10 school districts attended The Literacy Camp Delta Township location. We’re so proud of a program that has brought together so many new friends in such a fun learning environment.

  • No problem! Just tell us on the first day when we’re writing down how every child will get home that week. If there is a mid-week ride change, you can email it to Team Literacy Camp at info@theliteracycamp.com. If you need to notify the director of a ride change or anything else on the same day, you can reach Delta Township director, Jaclyn Riber, during camp by phone. Jayaraman’s Literacy Camp Director, Kathleen Jayaraman will also be available by phone during the week of camp. Those phone numbers will be shared with camp families before camp.

For questions about camp PRIOR TO THE WEEK OF, you can reach out to Katie Davis, at: 517-202-1617

  • Each child will need:

    – Packed lunch for those staying all day only

    – Water bottle (labeled with name)

    – Snack for each session

Please send your child with a snack (and/or lunch if staying all day) that is PEANUT & TREE NUT FREE & not manufactured in a facility that processes these ingredients. We have children attending camp with severe allergies & we work hard to maintain a safe environment for them. Thank you so much for your willingness & understanding to help keep all of our campers safe!

Some of our day will be spent outside so please send your child to camp in comfortable clothes & shoes. If you’d like your child to wear sunscreen and/or bug spray, please be sure to apply these before camp. If you’d like to leave it at camp for your child to reapply, please be sure to print a Sunscreen Release FORM (Download it HERE). and bring it to the registration table on your first day. If you aren’t able to download & print, we’ll have forms on the first day.

While we’ll have plenty of books & writing supplies available, we know that many of our little writers have favorite papers, notebooks, & pens they like to use. Please feel free to send these supplies with them if they’d like (labeled by name)! If your child has a favorite book(s) that they enjoy reading independently, feel free to send that along too! We have many books & writing supplies to choose from for independent readers & writers too, so this is optional!

  • We’ll be eagerly waiting your camper outside at 8:30 am if you’re coming to a morning or all day session or 12:30pm if you’re coming to an afternoon only session!

Please do not enter the building. We’ll be outside waiting for you everyday at 8:30 am and/or 12:30 pm & we’ll have a table set up outside on the first day for registration (weather permitting). We’re asking that all parents plan to park in the parking lot & walk your camper over to the table on the first day.

After the first day, you are welcome & encouraged to do a curbside drop-off. Please make sure your child stays in your vehicle until someone from Team Literacy Camp greets your child at the car to walk inside – so that no child is walking through the parking lot. If you can’t tell yet – we like to keep everyone extra safe!

On the first day, each family will need to check in at our registration table. You’ll be receiving a car visor sign with your child’s name for pick-up & we’ll ask you to share how your child will be getting home from camp.

If you are leaving a medication at camp (inhaler, epipen, etc.), you’ll need to bring a signed Medication Waiver. You can download & print the FORM ahead of time from our website. We also have a sunscreen release FORM if you plan to leave sunscreen with your child. If you’re not able to download & print beforehand, we will have copies at camp for you to fill out. We have many campers signed up for each session, so please be aware that drop-off on the first day may take several minutes. We’ll have 2 lines & we’ll try to be as quick as possible to respect your time! Thanks for your understanding! All other days, drop-off will be much quicker.

  • At the Delta Township Literacy Camp location, we’ll be ready with your campers at 12:00 pm for our morning session pick-ups & 4:00 pm for afternoon or all day session pick-ups in the same place as drop off.

Please do not enter the building – we’ll be outside to meet you when we’re all ready!

You’re welcome & encouraged to drive up to the circle & stay in your car for curbside pickup. Please know that a member of Team Literacy Camp will walk your child to your car to connect with each person picking up.

You’re also welcome to park & meet us outside the main doors but using the pick-up line is encouraged. One child will be released at a time to ensure they go with the correct adult – but we promise to work as quickly as possible! Please attach the name paper we provide you with at registration to the visor of your car if possible – this makes things MUCH QUICKER. If you have a situation where you need to pick your child up from camp early, just let us know ahead of time & then come on in the building when you need to. Be sure your child’s teacher & the director know that you are signing them out early.
